The influence of outer boundary conditions on the interlayer exchange coupling in magnetic sandwich structures

摘要
It is shown that interlayer exchange coupling in magnetic/nonmagnetic/magnetic trilayers depends significantly on the external boundary conditions. The following cases are considered: (i) the structure is covered on both sides by semi-infinite nonmagnetic metallic systems, (ii) it is covered on both sides by nonconducting perfectly reflecting materials, and (iii) it is covered on one side by a nonmagnetic metal and on the other side by a perfectly reflecting material. As a special case, we also consider coupling between a thin magnetic film and a semi-infinite magnetic system. In all cases diffuse scattering processes are neglected. The interlayer coupling is shown to be significantly enhanced in the case with perfectly reflecting boundary conditions in comparison to the other cases.
