As the understanding of erectile physiology has advanced, the range of treatment options available for managing ED has increased. While some, particularly those based on certain oral therapies, are effective and well tolerated, others, including those involving surgical intervention, are usually implemented only when less invasive options have been exhausted. The introduction of new effective oral treatments, suitable for use in a broad range of patients, will extend the current range of first-line treatment options. As it is unlikely that any single agent will ever provide a solution for all men with ED, an expanded armamentarium of treatment options will greatly enhance the chances that any given man will be able to find a therapy that is both acceptable and appropriate to him [54].
