Boron isotope effect in single-crystal YNi2B2C and LuNi2B2C superconductors

The boron isotope effect in high-quality, single-crystal samples of YNi2B2C and LuNi2B2C superconductors is studied to probe the role of phonons in determining T-c. Values of Delta T-c = T-c(B-10) - T-c(B-11) of 0.29 +/- 0.08 and 0.16 +/- 0.07 K are obtained for YNi2B2C and LuNi2B2C, respectively, corresponding to partial isotope exponents of alpha(B) = 0.21 +/- 0.07 and 0.11 +/- 0.05. The values for YNi2B2C, are in broad agreement with previous measurements using polycrystalline samples [D.D. Lawrie, J.P. Franck, Physica C 245 (1995) 159]. The observation of a statistically significant boron isotope effect is further evidence for a phonon mechanism of superconductivity in these compounds. (C) 1999 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.
