Bulk nanostructured Zr-based multiphase alloys with high strength and good ductility

Bulk nanostructured Zr/Ti-Cu-Al-Ni alloys were prepared via crystallization of cast glassy samples. Nanocrystalline precipitates increased the room temperature mechanical strength while maintaining microplasticity for limited volume fractions of particles. Both the amorphous matrix as well as the precipitates contributed to the overall strength of the material. At elevated temperatures, the influence of nanoparticles was of minor importance but the deformation behavior was governed by the homogeneous flow of the supercooled liquid of second phases.
