A variety of studies indicate that GABA(B) receptor agonists may be useful in the treatment of addictive disorders. This brief review summarizes self-administration studies in rats which show that baclofen and other GABA(B) agonists may have specific effects on the reinforcing effects of cocaine. Preliminary clinical data with baclofen have also been encouraging. The obstacles and issues related to the use of GABA drugs in addiction therapy are briefly addressed. (c) 2005 Elsevier Inc.
