Current status of heart transplantation in children: update 2003

Advances in pediatric heart transplant outcomes over the last two decades have resulted in marked improvement in medium-term survival and quality of life. Overall survival rates at 1, 5, and 10 years are currently 85%, 75%, and 65%, respectively. Despite many advances, multiple long-term complications occur and require intense follow-up. The coordinated team management of the primary care physician and the transplant team can have important impact on the long-term outcomes of transplant patients.
