Embrittlement phenomena in the HAZ of Al-Zn-Mg weldments

摘要
In the present investigation four different aluminium flat bar extrusions within the AA7000 series have been subjected to GMA welding. The weldments were subsequently evaluated by means of metallography and tensile testing. The metallographic investigation revealed large differences in particle size and distribution at the grain boundaries adjacent to the fusion line. Evidence of local melting in the HAZ was found in one of the alloys containing copper which, in turn, caused HAZ embrittlement. This was verified by Charpy V-notch testing.
