Whole body scanning is a useful technique with applications in the apparel industry, human systems engineering and medical field. A worldwide review of whole body scanners describes eight commercially available systems. The scanners differ considerably in price (US$50 000-410 000), resolution (1-8 mm) and speed (0.2-3 s). Most scanners use laser stripe projection; other techniques are patterned light projection and stereo photogrammetry. To cover a high percentage of the body surface area, the arrangement of the projection devices and cameras have to be chosen wisely. It depends on the application area, which configuration is best suited for the job. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Limited. All rights reserved.
