Fecal incontinence is a common and socially disabling disorder. Combined clinical and, in selected cases, functional and radiological assessment allows determination of the underlying mechanisms and planning of treatment. Fecal impaction and sphincter degeneration are common causes in the community, whereas sphincter trauma (frequently obstetric) is the commonest etiologic factor identified in specialist practice. Based on the functional anatomic findings, a tailored management, selecting from pharmacological, behavioral, or surgical modalities, may prove beneficial.
