Laparoscopic herniorrhaphy is a viable and sometimes preferable method for repairing hernias. Since its introduction over 12 years ago, it has been refined, and studied vigorously and intensively. This article reviews the operative techniques currently used, as well as data from randomized trials and meta-analyses on recurrence rates, complications, and costs, comparing laparoscopic repair to its open counterpart. These are discussed with an eye on the future of this operation.
