Numerical study of impact and solidification of a droplet over a deposited frozen splat

The impact and solidification of a molten tin droplet on another solidified splat was studied using a 3-D model of droplet impact for varying offset distances between droplet centres. The model applies a fixed-grid Eulerian control volume method to simulate fluid dynamics and heat transfer and a volume-of-fluid (VOF) algorithm to track free surface deformation. It was found that the final shapes of impinging droplets were sensitive to the offset distance. Predictions of droplet shapes during impact from the model agreed well with photographs taken in experiments.
