Low-temperature Raman scattering of LaRu4P12 and PrRu4P12 with filled skutterudite-type structure

Raman scattering spectra of LaRu4P12 and PrRu4P12 with the filled skutterudite-type structure were observed as a function of temperature between 6 and 300 K. All observed phonon modes in LaRu4P12 increase their peak frequencies monotonically with decreasing temperature. In contrast, the 380 cm(-1) mode in PrRu4P12, which is assigned to the vibration involving P atoms, indicates a softening and broadening below the metal-insulator (MI) transition temperature (T-MI = 60 K). This suggests that the MI transition of PrRu4P12 is related to a lattice vibration of P atoms. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
