A DTA study of crystal nucleation in Na2O-SiO2 glasses

Crystal nucleation is investigated in several sodium silicate glasses between the metasilicate and disilicate compositions. The crystal phases which appear and their locations (i.e. internal or surface) are determined with the aid of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and optical microscopy. Several compositions in this range exhibit internal nucleation which is believed to be homogeneous in nature. The temperature dependence of the steady state nucleation rate of one composition (43Na(2)O . 57SiO(2)) which shows internal nucleation is found using a novel DTA procedure which relies upon producing identical number densities of nucleated particles for different thermal histories. It is observed that the peak nucleation rate for this composition occurs at or below a temperature of 410 degrees C, which is at least 50 degrees C lower than that reported for nucleation in the 46Na(2)O . 54SiO(2) glass composition.
