Six new lignans, 5,5 "-bis [2,3-dicarboxy-6,7-dihydroxy-1-(3',4'-dihydroxyphenyl)-1,2-dihydronaphthalene], trilobatins AC, trilobatin A-1 "-methyl ester and bazzania acid, as well as 2,3-dicarboxy-6,7-dihydroxy-1-(3',4'-dihydroxyphenyl)-1,2-dihydronaphthalene and 3-carboxy-6,7-dihydroxy-1-(3',4'-dihydroxyphenyl)-naphthalene were isolated from the liverwort Bazzania trilobata. Their structures have been elucidated from extensive NMR spectral evidence and, in the case of trilobatin C, additionally by chemical derivatization. A possible biosynthetic pathway for bazzania acid is discussed. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
