Pinning and depinning of single vortices in niobium thin film dc superconducting quantum interference devices

We have studied the influence of an rf magnetic field on pinning and depinning of single vortices in thin film dc superconducting quantum interference devices. We report on the measurements of two-level fluctuations caused by vortices hopping between two pinning sites. From the temperature-dependent time, for which a vortex remains in one of the pinning sites, it was possible to deduce the activation energy for hopping between the pinning sites. By the use of a high frequency demagnetization process, we could force the vortex to change the pinning site or to leave the superconductor. (C) 1998 American Institute of Physics.
