Low temperature degradation mechanism of tetragonal zirconia ceramics in water: role of oxygen vacancies

摘要
A new degradation mechanism is proposed for tetragonal ZrO2, in which the degradation is assumed to accomplish by the annihilation of oxygen vacancies in the ZrO2 lattice, while the degradation is supposed to propagate along the grain boundaries. This new mechanism is supported by an XPS study and the studies of other researchers, and it has also satisfactorily explained most phenomenological observations concerning the degradation.
