Developments in the diagnosis, prevention and therapy of viral infections after bone marrow transplantation: A focus on adoptive cellular immunotherapy

Advances in virology and immunology have led to improvements in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of viral infections in bone marrow transplant recipients. Recent studies have demonstrated the limitations of employing antiviral agents to reduce disease incidence and have demonstrated that the reconstitution of host immunity either by vaccination of the donor pre-transplant or by administration of donor-derived lymphocytes to bone marrow transplant recipients will be essential for providing long-term protection against disease.
