Co-based soft magnetic bulk amorphous ferromagnets prepared by powder consolidation

Co(70.3)Fe(4.7)Si(10)B(15) and Co(56)Fe(16)Zr(8)B(20) amorphous ribbons have been short time ball-milled in order to prepare powder samples. The powders were consolidated by hot pressing into disc-shaped bulk specimens. The influence of the consolidation temperature on the magnetic properties of bulk samples was investigated. Optimized consolidation parameters allowed to obtain bulk glassy samples without significant crystallization. In contrast, the gradual devitrification of the Co-based bulk metallic glasses during consolidation leads to a giant increase in coercivity. The observed magnetic hardening is assumed to be due to pinning of domain walls by crystallites. The lowest values of coercivity of 23 A/m and 73 A/m were achieved after consolidation at 540degreesC and 600degreesC for Co(70.3)Fe(4.7)Si(10)B(15) and Co(56)Fe(16)Zr(8)B(20) bulk samples, respectively.
