Applications of synchrotron radiation micro-focus techniques to the study of polymer and biopolymer fibers

Micro-X-ray diffraction using synchrotron radiation has been developed in recent years as a tool for the local analysis of bulk polymer and biopolymer samples. Developments in X-ray optics associated with the introduction of third generation synchrotron radiation sources now allow routine experiments at the I mu m scale. Several experiments at the 100 rim scale have also been reported with future developments aiming for the 50 nm scale and smaller. In this review, the current state of experimental possibilities have been summarised with an emphasis on in-situ fiber scanning and deformation studies. Examples of unconventional in-situ studies such as microhardness testing or hydration by inkjet printing systems demonstrate the largely unexplored potential of micro-X-ray diffraction techniques.
