Treatment of Posttraumatic Varus Ankle Deformity with Supramalleolar Osteotomy

A majority of patients with posttraumatic arthritis of the ankle joint present with a malaligned hindfoot. Young patients with midstage arthritis have been shown to benefit from alignment surgery with regard to the functional, subjective, and radiologic outcome. However, due to the complex build of the ankle joint, normalization of intraarticular load distribution may require not only correction of the distal tibial articular surface angle but also additional procedures such as sagittal plane correction and adjustment of the fibular length and orientation.
