State-of-the-art medical treatment may ultimately be advanced as much through coincidence and propinquity as through traditional scientific inquiry. Renal osteodystrophy is no exception. This article reviews renal osteodystrophy from a historical perspective: from first recognition of the problem through current clinical manifestations and theories regarding its pathogenesis.
