I have compared the advantages and disadvantages of conventional and digital impression-making for typical crowns and fixed prostheses in routine practice. Although most dentists are not looking for a new technique to replace their conventional impression-making procedure, digital impression-making is making a promising entry into the profession. Two digital impression devices are available, and others soon will follow. Both conventional and digital impressions have advantages, but it is apparent that after undergoing a brief learning period, those who make digital impressions find the process highly appealing and technically acceptable.
