LOIS has provided an unparalleled opportunity to test a database intended for very large diverse data sets recording the changing state of the environment over space and time. This paper describes the logical and physical data models employed in the database and discusses how, in the light of experience, they could be improved. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.
