STM/AFM studies of the catalytic reaction of oxygen with hydrogen on the surface of thin palladium film

Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) flow reactors working at pressure similar to 10(5) Pa were used to follow in situ the changes of the nanostructure of thin palladium film during the catalytic reaction of oxygen with hydrogen. STM images obtained in the course of the reciprocal oxygen-hydrogen titration arise as a superposition of charge distribution within the adsorbate and a structure of the adsorbent surface. Contrary to the STM investigation, the results of hydrogen-oxygen titration on thin Pd film surface observed by means of AFM exhibit a real nanostructure of thin Pd film, (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd.
