Microstructure analysis and strength evaluation of reaction sintered SiC/SiC composites

摘要
The microstructure and the fracture characteristics of reaction-sintered SiC/SiC composites was investigated by means of electron microscopy and three-point bending tests. It was found that the matrix morphology of the SiC/SiC composites is composed of three different phases, crystallized β-SiC, unreacted carbon; and isolated silicon. TEM analysis revealed that the unreacted carbon phase is finely distributed in the matrix region. The SiC/SiC composite displays a noncatastrophic failure behavior with an average fracture energy of about 3.2 kJ/m2. The average flexural stress of the SiC/SiC composites is about 330 MPa.
