Preparation of perpendicular magnetization Co/Pt nanostructures by electrodeposition

Electrodeposition will prove to be a promising candidate for the preparation of magnetic Co/Pt nanostructures. Multilayered face-centered cubic Co/Pt nanostructures grown on a Pt(111) or Cu(111) single- crystal substrate by electrodeposition under potential control exhibit a remanent perpendicular magnetization and a large coercivity, which depends on the deposition overpotential and, hence, the multilayer growth mechanism. Reflection electron microscopy and cross- sectional transmission electron microscopy of the Pt/Co/Pt(111) system have revealed a possible interfacial alloying below the Pt overlayers, leading to an induced magnetic moment on the Pt atoms and asymmetry between Pt/Co and Co/Pt interfaces of the multilayers.
