Structural instability vs. bandwidth-controlled charge ordering in x=1/2 manganites

摘要
Based on high-resolution neutron diffraction data, the metal-insulator transition of Pr1/2Sr1/2MnO3 at 150 K is shown to be due to a temperature-driven structural instability (I4/mmm --> P2(1)/n) as temperature decreases. The allowed breathing-type distortions do not stabilize a charge ordered state in the A-type magnetic configuration observed in the P2(1)/n phase. (C) 1999 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.
