Infrared spectroscopy of LuAlO3:Ce a useful tool to determine Ce concentration

Infrared spectra of monocrystalline samples of LuAlO3:Ce with different Ce content are presented. The origins of the observed transitions between Stark levels of the F-2(5/2) and F-2(7/2) states are identified, and the split of the two lowest components of the F-2(5/2) state is estimated as 120 cm(-1). Three of the transitions are shown to be useful to monitor cerium content in the specimens since their absorption intensities obey the Beer-Lambert law. This convenient and reliable method can be used in the material optimization procedure to improve its scintillation performance, significantly reducing the cost and time of the needed analysis.
