A component-based software engineering workshop at the 20th international Conference on Software Engineering discussed the current state of components. The authors synthesize these perspectives and ideas into a coherent discussion of how components are reshaping SE practices. A component-based system requires an infrastructure for communication and collaboration. Roger Sessions'sidebar on component middleware examines the Microsoft MTS and OMG Corba infrastructure technologies. David Chappell addresses the fundamental architectural issue of transactions in his sidebar, comparing how Microsoft's MTS and Sun's Enterprise JavaBeans handle transactions and component state.
