Finger formation during droplet impact on a liquid film

摘要
The impact of a droplet of diameter D an a liquid film is studied numerically in three dimensions of space, with and without axisymmetry. When this axisymmetry is broken by a small perturbation, a crown topped with growing fingers is obtained. An initial perturbation amplitude of 0.005 D is enough. Simulations provide evidence for impulsive accelerations of the liquid-gas interface soon after impact. Fingers form where the troughs of the initial perturbation were. Thus, curvature is reversed just when fingers develop. The length of these fingers grows linearly with time. (C) Academie des Sciences/Elsevier, Paris.
