摘要
When assessing the visibility of a traffic sign, parameters such as contrast, size, and surround conditions all have an impact. Currently, no visual performance model explicitly considers the impact of surround conditions on target visibility This study observed the effects that target contrast, border width, and surround field luminance had on two dependent variables, response time, and a subjective readability rating. Three major conclusions were made from the results. First, when target conditions are well above threshold, surround conditions are unimportant to response time and subjective ratings. Second, Rea and Ouellette's visual performance model appears to be accurate for predicting response times for a wide variety of suprathreshold conditions, but near threshold stimulus parameters Frill lead to discrepancies. Third, visual responses can be measured using either of two distinct channels, each having different response properties, and each providing different insights into visibility.
