A lightweight, inexpensive benthic core sampler for use in shallow water

摘要
The design of a lightweight, inexpensive sediment corer is described. The device has been used successfully to sample attached algae from sand, peat, and mud substrata in water depths up to 4 m. With this device, the sediment-water interface can be visualized in the core. Fabrication requires no special skills and involves materials that are readily available at most hardware stores. Comparisons of chlorophyll a samples collected with this corer vs. a commercially available piston corer at two sites revealed no significant differences in chlorophyll a concentration when using the described sediment corer.
