In vitro and in vivo toxicity of magnetic microspheres

The interaction of magnetic microspheres with cells was studied using an in vitro 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2yl]-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (= MTT) assay. Viability and metabolic activity were reduced in all examples. The MTT assay is not recommended for this application due to high variability and non-specificity. Poly(lactic acid) microspheres were further tested in vivo. Intrathecal injection in rats produced no obvious side effects: over 12 months. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
