The majority of patients who present with esophageal cancer are not candidates for curative resection, and the main objective of treatment is palliation of symptoms. Palliation has been achieved with thermal laser (Nd:YAG), nonthermal laser (photodynamic therapy), brachytherapy, and esophageal stents. The optimal treatment for a given patient depends on tumor size, location, patient preferences, and local expertise.
