Potentiometric sensors for polyionic analytes may show very low electrode slopes, as predicted by the Nernst equation. This paper explores the possibility of using plasticized poly(vinyl chloride) membrane electrodes containing the ion-exchanger tridodecylmethylammonium chloride, conditioned in solutions of the sodium poly(anetholesulfonate), a polyanionic anticoagulant also called Liquoid(R), as reference electrodes without a liquid junction. This approach may be useful in samples such as whole blood that contain variable levels of a polyanionic anticoagulant. It is found that such electrodes show virtually no NaCl response in samples with and without anticoagulant and widely varying levels of NaCl. (C) 1999 The Electrochemical Society.
