yNaive T cells can become either tolerant or immune as a result of their first encounter with antigen. It has been suggested that lymphoid and myeloid dendritic cells, respectively control such decisions. Here, BArbara Fazekas de St Groth discusses evolutionary aspects of the functional distinction between these two types of dendritic cells.
