Melt textured Nd1Ba2Cu3Oy- and Sm1Ba2Cu3Oy-composites with different additions of Nd4Ba2Cu2O10/Sm2Ba1Cu1O5 have been prepared. The temperature schedule, the oxygen atmosphere during melt texturing and the amount of additions determines the resulting superconducting properties. From the evaluation of critical temperature and critical current density for fields up to 5 T, the necessity of different processing parameters far Nd1Ba2Cu3Oy- and Sm1Ba2Cu3Oy-composites was deduced. Fabrication of Nd1Ba2Cu3Oy, composites is more complicated and not yet optimized. In contrast, Sm1Ba2Cu3Oy shows good results of microstructure, shown by flux maps, and of high j(c), leading to higher levitation forces. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
