Hyderabad is one of India's fastest growing cities. The numerous water bodies of the city suffer from this megaurbanization. Based on a field visit in April/May 2011 this article describes the situation of the Durgam Cheruvu, an artificial lake in Madhapur. With the rise of the IT industry the former village has become a popular residential area for the new middle class. Since there is no sanitary infrastructure and laws as well as building regulations are not observed or enforced, the lake is highly polluted due to the discharge of waste water.
