Corrosion of AZ91 in 1N NaCl and the mechanism of magnesium corrosion

A study of the NDE of the magnesium alloy AZ91 in order to provide a test of the unipositive Mg+ ion mechanism for the corrosion of magnesium was reported. The electrolyte, made with analytic grade reagents and distilled water, was 1 N NaCl solution, the pH was adjusted to pH 11 with NaOH. The evolved hydrogen was collected during the experiment, and the concentration of Mg2+ in the solution was measured. The results demonstrated that the volume of evolved hydrogen increased with increasing applied current density. The electrolyte was analyzed at the end of each experiment. It was observed that the concentration of Mg2+ ions increased with increasing applied current density. The experimental results agreed with the standard excepted model of Mg, corrosion involving the unipositive Mg+ ion.
