摘要
The upward electrical discharges from the tops of thunderclouds are investigated by a numerical simulation method in this study. Based on a positive dipole (positive above negative charge) charge structure of thunderclouds, a randomly stepped model is developed to simulate the growth of upward electrical discharges. It is found that an upward electrical discharge is preferred when the distance between the positive and negative charges of a thundercloud is large. The simulation reveals a three-dimensional (3D) overall feature of upward electrical discharges that are primarily terminated at an altitude below 40 kin, which is in agreement with observations of blue jets and blue starters.
