Synthesis of layered-structure LiMn1-xCrxO2 for lithium-ion batteries by the rheological phase method

m-LiMn1-xCrxO2 solid solution with alpha-NaFeO2 layer-type crystal structure has been prepared by the rheological phase method. The size of so-prepared crystallite is 60-200 nm in diameter. Due to the very small particle size and good homogeneity, the R-LiMn1-xCrxO2 (made by the rheological phase reaction) shows much higher specific capacity for both charge and discharge compared with the S-LiMn1-xCrxO2 (made by the solid-state reaction). The evolution of discharge curves with cycling demonstrates that no additional spinel-type tetrahedral sites for Li formed during cycling of the m-LiMn1-xCrxO2 compound. (C) 200 Elsevier B.V.
