Signal... A review is given on SPAses, a family of proteases that cleavage signal peptides from exported proteins within the cell. Targeting sequences that are processed by the proteases are described. Different substrates for SPases are reviewed and shown how they are assayed for activity. A detailed description of the proteases is reported. Furthermore, the fate of the signal peptide after it is removed from the exported protein is described.
