Line broadening in the collective dynamics of liquid and solid water

摘要：

The linewidth of collective acousticlike modes of liquid and solid (ice Ih) water, measured by inelastic x-ray scattering at momentum transfers (Q) larger than 2 nm(-1), shows a large increase at the Q values of approximate to 7.5 nm(-1). This result, together with previous observations on both acousticlike and opticlike excitations, further emphasizes the analogies in the whole high-frequency collective dynamics of liquid and solid H2O, and challenges our present understanding of these dynamical phenomena.
