Association of mitral annular calcium with symptomatic peripheral arterial disease in older persons

A prospective study investigated the association of mitral annular calcium (MAC) with symptomatic peripheral arterial disease (PAD) in 924 men (mean age 80 +/- 8 years) and in 1,881 women (mean age 81 +/- 8 years). Symptomatic PAD was present in 144 of 336 men (43%) with MAC and in 162 of 588 men (28%) without MAC (p < 0.0001) and in 304 of 985 women (31%) with MAC and in 172 of 896 women (19%) without MAC (p < 0.0001).
