Oxygen interactions with a Mo(001) surface have been studied by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). A partially oxidized (root 5x root 5) structure was observed to form Mo4O4 layers. One unit cell of the (root 5x root 5) structure includes four Mo atoms and four oxygen atoms. The fully oxidized (2x1) structure was formed by oxygen-induced missing row reconstruction. Both structures are formed at high temperatures and involve removal of surface Mo atoms. Structure models are proposed to explain the observed reconstructed surfaces.
