摘要
In a recent paper, Cooper and Dobson (2007) discuss the benefits of pesticides to mankind. Their analysis sometimes confuses benefits that derive from the control of a pest with the benefits that derive from the use of pesticides. As there are often several potential ways of controlling the damage incurred by pests, it is misleading to attribute all of the benefits associated with pest control to pesticides. Each pest control method has associated costs and benefits. In many situations pesticides will offer advantages over other control methods, and these advantages may be associated with characteristics such as ease of use, speed of control, consistency of control and risk reduction. However, it is only by comparing the costs and benefits of each control method in a given situation that the relative merits of the different control methods can be evaluated. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd.
