Study of solution-cast films of PMMA by dielectric spectroscopy: influence of the nature of the solvent on alpha and beta relaxations

The relaxation properties of cast poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) films have been studed by dielectric spectroscopy. Conventional PMMA was disolved in various solvents (chloroform, toluene, tetrahydrofuran and acetone) and the solutions obtained were cast on a substrate. The influence of the nature of the solvent on the relaxation temperatures of PMMA solid films was studied by dielectric spectroscopy. The variation of the loss factor, tan delta, with temperature was analysed. The results show that the tan delta peak corresponding to the alpha transition is shifted towards lower temperatures, compared with that of the bulk polymer. The temperature of the beta relaxation is decreased for chloroform and increased for the other solvents. Explanations based on acid-base interactions between PMMA and trapped solvent molecules are proposed to understand the influence of the solvent. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
