In this study, novel organic/inorganic epoxy nanocomposites containing nitrogen/silicon/phosphorus were prepared using sol-gel process. In order to improve the compatibility between the organic and inorganic phases, epoxy was modified by coupling agent. There is covalent bonding between organic and inorganic phases. It will lead to the increasing of the thermal stability. The thermal properties and kinetics of thermal degradation were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The flame retardancy was monitored by LOI. Results showed nanocomposites possessed excellent thermal stability and self-extinguishing property. The activation energy of thermal degradation was calculated from Ozawa's method. The activation energies of thermal degradation epoxy nanocomposites containing nitrogen/silicon/phosphorus were higher than those of pure epoxy. It revealed the thermal property of nanocomposites was promoted.
