Highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has been linked to increases in plasma lipids. To determine the risk of cardiovascular disease, 23 patients with a stroke or myocardial infarction (separated according to the year of event development; 1994-1997, n = 9 versus 1998-2000, n = 14) were identified and compared. 'Classic' risk factors were frequently detected, and seemed to be more deeply associated in the short term. HAART conferred longer survival, even after the development of cardiovascular complications.
