Ferrate(V) oxidation of pollutants: a premix pulse radiolysis study

A premix pulse radiolysis technique has been used to measure the rates of reaction between Fe(V) and a wide range of organic compounds that are of concern in water treatment, municipal biochemical wastewater treatment and bleaching processes. Fe(V) is conveniently generated from Fe(VI) by reduction with either the hydrated electron or organic radicals. Fe(VI) as K2FeO4 is synthesized by oxidizing Fe(III) with hypochlorite. The rate constants for the oxidation of compounds by Fe(V) vary from 10(1) to 10(9) dm(3) mol(-1)s(-1). This is 10(3)-10(5) times faster than the oxidation reaction with Fe(VI). The results suggest the potential of Fe(V) in environmental and industrial removal of pollutants. The use of the ionizing radiation technique in the presence of Fe(VI) would form Fe(V) and may have synergistic effects in the oxidation of pollutants. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd.
